Bachelor of Arts in History: Secondary Social Studies Education (9-12)

First Year | Second Year | Third Year | Fourth Year

Recommended Degree Pathway for Secondary Social Studies Education (9-12)

[Printable version]

The following is the recommended sequence of courses for Social Studies Education (SSE) majors. This pathway targets a degree completion within four academic years. coursework falls into four main categories: general education requirements, major specialty area requirements, professional studies core, and content pedagogy. Additionally, all students are required to complete 9 semester hours of writing intensive courses. These courses are marked as WE or WD courses during registration. Many of the history content courses required for the major and general education courses in division II.A fulfill this requirement. For example, HST 3000 is a designated WD course. Students should confer with their advisor closely in order to ensure that they are meeting this requirement through their coursework.

In the degree pathway, the course category is identified in the Comments column (note that general education requirements are identified by their specific division for further clarity). Particular courses fulfill both a general education (GE) and a major requirement, as there is some overlap; these courses are highlighted in yellow. It is important to note that the degree major requires specific options within the general education requirements. Course recommendations in the pathway align to these course requirements both for the major and degree completion as outlined in the academic catalog and the degree checklist (which can be found on the History Department webpage). Specific guidelines to the courses that meet the general education requirements as outlined in the pathway can be found under Forms on the Advising Center’s website.

SSE majors are expected to gain formal admission into the Teacher Education Program (TEP) no later than the conclusion of the fall term of their third year. Part of the admission requirements included the completion of all but 9 hours of general education requirements, and successful completion of EDN 2100 with a C or better. As such, this recommended pathway emphasizes the completion of all general education coursework by the end of the second year.

Some courses in the Professional Studies Core and Content Pedagogy require field experiences. Students should bear this in mind as they plan their course of study. Finally, the Content Pedagogy courses are sequenced and are only offered during certain semesters. Students should consult with Program Coordinator regarding the sequencing and additional requirements for the Professional Licensure affiliated with this degree path. Because this major leads to a professional teacher educator license, students are highly encouraged to carefully review all degree requirements for the additional procedures and considerations for the licensure process. Additional information for the licensure process can be found at the School of Education.
