BraveStart allows incoming students the unique opportunity to a get a head in their collegiate experience here at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
During the summer session II semester, students will take college courses, depending on availability, in the areas of:
- library science
- physical education.
Students will also attend various workshops and presentations that will engage them in the UNCP community.
Upon completion of the BraveStart program, students can earn up to 7.0 academic credit hours and enter into the fall semester equipped with tools to continue their academic success.
During your time here at BraveStart, you will be preparing to enter college knowing that you can excel here successfully at UNCP. The programs supportive environment and helpful staff give you a “home away from home” feeling before your freshman year begins.

Q: What are the requirements of the Bravestart program?
A: Students must be accepted into the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and have completed the FAFSA by June 1st , 2017. Additionally, students must have completed the BraveStart application no later than June 1st, 2018.
Q: Will I be living on campus?
A: Students have the option of living on campus, however Student participating in the BraveStart program are not required to live on campus. All classes and programing will take place during the day.
Q: What academic resources will be available for me as a participant in the BraveStart program?
A: Students will have access to our tutoring center and Career Center as well as other academic resources on campus.
Q: How will I pay for my classes and books for the classes that I am enrolled in for the summer?
A: Students are responsible for paying for all courses and books for their classes. However, if the student completes the FAFSA for Summer session by June 1, 2018 and if students are full PELL eligible then all of your books and tuition for the summer are free. The financial aid will cover your tuition and books for the summer session.
Q: If I apply for financial aid in the summer to cover the cost of BraveStart, will that affect my financial aid for the following fall semester?
A: Your financial aid will not be affected in the fall if you receive financial aid in the summer. You will have to complete a FAFSA form for 2017-2018 year and then complete another FAFSA form for the 2018-2019 academic year.
