2016-17 Thematic Goal: Maximize Student Success

Service is a core value of UNCP, and no one knows better than the Office of Civic and Community Engagement! In fact, CCE is leading the project plan designed to expand student service-learning opportunities. A key accomplishment in December is a result of this project plan.

CCE staff and volunteers with President Spellings"Service-learning provides a unique opportunity for our students to build valuable skills and experiences while addressing needs in our community. Students enrolled in service-learning courses at UNCP stated that the service component helped them to better understand and connect with the course curriculum. With 111 service-learning courses offered this academic year, we are engaging about 30% of our student body in academic service-learning, dedicating approximately 15,000 hours of in-kind service to our community just through this initiative alone," states Christie Poteet, Director, Office of Civic and Community Engagement.

As of the December report date, some 51 service-learning courses have been identified for the spring semester! CCE and the School of Education, among other programs, are working diligently to identify additional opportunities for students to engage in our community and make an impact.
