POL 11.40.01 - Student Immunization Policy

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 North Carolina General Statute §130A 152-157 requires that every student enrolled at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke furnish proof of the immunizations described below. Students who do not have a complete immunization record on file when beginning classes will have thirty (30) days to obtain the required immunizations. Students who are not in compliance within thirty (30) days of the first day of class will be administratively withdrawn from classes.

1.2 This law applies to all students except students residing off campus and registering for any combination of:

1.2.a. off-campus courses;

1.2.b. evening courses;

1.2.c. weekend courses; or

1.2.d. no more than four traditional day credit hours in on campus courses.

2. IMMUNIZATIONS THAT ARE REQUIRED PURSUANT TO NC STATE LAW

2.1 Students 17 years of age or younger:

2.1.a. three (3) DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) or TD (Tetanus, Diphtheria) doses – one (1) TD or TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) booster must have been issued within the past ten (10) years;

2.1.b. three (3) polio doses;

2.1.c. two (2) measles (rubeola), two (2) mumps, one (1) rubella – two (2) doses of MMR are preferred; and

2.1.d. three (3) Hepatitis B doses.

2.2 Students born in 1957 or later and 18 years of age or older:

2.2.a. three (3) DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) or TD (Tetanus, Diphtheria) doses –  one (1) TD or TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) booster must have been within the past ten (10) years;

2.2.b. two (2) measles (rubeola), two (2) mumps, one (1) rubella – two (2) doses of MMR are preferred; and

2.2.c. three (3) Hepatitis B doses.

2.3 Students born before 1957:

2.3.a. three (3) DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) or TD (Tetanus, Diphtheria) doses –  one (1) TD or TDAP(Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) booster must have been within the past ten (10) years

3. GENERAL INFORMATION

3.1 An individual is excluded from the requirement for the measles vaccine, if a physician verifies that the student was diagnosed with the disease prior to January 1, 1994.

3.2 Only positive tests for protective antibody titers against measles, mumps, and rubella are accepted in place of vaccines. Laboratory test results must be provided.

3.3 Only one (1) measles (rubeola) dose on or after the first birthday is required for students who entered college for the first time before July 1, 1994. Students who entered after July 1, 1994, must have two doses of measles vaccine.

3.4 A mumps vaccine is not required if any of the following occur:

3.4.a. an individual was born prior to 1957;

3.4.b. enrolled in a college or university for the first time before July 1, 1994; or

3.4.c. an individual entered a college or university prior to July 1, 2008, is not required to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine.

3.5 Hepatitis B vaccine is not required if a student was born prior to July 1, 1994.

3.6 Rubella vaccine is not required if any of the following occur: 

3.6.a. an individual is 50 years of age or older; or

3.6.b. enrolled in a college or university before February 1, 1989, and after the 30th birthday.

4. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

4.1 International students are required to have a TB (Tuberculin) skin test (PPD Purified Protein Derivative) administered by a U.S. facility with a negative result within twelve (12) months preceding the beginning of classes. A chest x-ray will be required if the test is positive.
