UNCP is continuously moving forward toward a more sustainable environment and reductions in our current energy usage. 2014 found us tightening our belts on energy usage and energy waste to the tune of about $350,000 in savings. 2015 will find us doing more of the same as we look for new and different ways to be more efficient. We still need your help identifying and stopping energy waste. You are our eyes and ears on campus to help stamp out waste. Keep up the good work everyone!
Strategic Energy Plans
Facilities Management is in its second year of a Performance Contract with Siemens, Inc. that included four campus buildings. We are working closely with Siemens to measure our energy savings from the first year and should have those numbers by the end of the spring semester. We will also be implementing a LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting contract with Johnson Controls that will begin in the fall 2015. This will include about $1.3 million of LED lighting being installed on UNCP’s campus. This is the newest lighting technology on the market today.
During 2014 UNCP installed its first solar array on campus with the construction of our first electric vehicle charging station located in front of Lumbee and Dial Halls. Look for more solar projects to begin in 2015 as we move to make our campus more carbon neutral.
The 2015 school year will bring an important conference to UNCP in February 2016. The Appalachian State University’s mid-year conference will be hosted by UNCP. This conference will see Energy and Sustainability Managers from around the state of North Carolina along with other energy and sustainability professionals converge on our campus for this conference. It will be a great time for all to learn what other professionals are doing within the state to reduce the carbon footprint and share ideas with one another.
If you would like to get involved with energy conservation or sustainability here at UNCP, please consider attending our monthly Sustainability meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. in the UC room 233. Administrators, faculty and students are all welcome to attend and share ideas.
